Preparing for a Second Medical Opinion

Define what you want reviewed

Write down the decision or uncertainty you want the second clinician to consider. It may concern a diagnosis, proposed procedure, treatment options or interpretation of recent findings.

This question should be expressed in your own words, then shared with the receiving provider so they can confirm whether the requested specialist and records are appropriate.

Prepare the relevant clinical story

Collect the referral or clinical summary, significant test results, imaging reports and files, procedure notes, current medication information and the existing recommendation.

Arrange documents by date and include a concise timeline. Ask the receiving specialist which originals, images or translations are required before the appointment.

Coordinate the appointment carefully

Confirm whether the review is in person or remote, who will receive the files, how they must be transferred and when the clinician needs them.

If an interpreter or family member will join, agree this in advance. Keep the patient central to the conversation and avoid having several people speak at once.

Compare recommendations with the treating team

A second opinion may agree with the existing plan, suggest another option or request more information. It does not guarantee a different answer.

Take the written opinion back to the treating clinician and ask how it relates to the full clinical picture. Treatment decisions should be made with licensed professionals who understand the patient’s circumstances.
